I find it odd that Anchorman 2 and Dumb and Dumber To had trouble finding financing, but studios seem pretty eager to get involved with another sequel to a popular comedy (albeit far less popular), Hot Tub Time Machine.
Paramount has acquired the worldwide and video distribution rights to the comedy, which will be released in some already signed international markets by MGM, which produced the film. The film still doesn’t have a release date yet, and the extent of its U.S. theatrical release is up in the air right now. If you recall, the original film didn’t do great at the box office (it grossed $50 million), but it really cleaned up on VOD and DVD.
The sequel will have returning stars Rob Corddry, Craig Robinson, and Clark Duke, who will be joined by Adam Scott (TV’s Parks and Recreation, Step Brothers) who will play the future son of John Cusack’s character from the first film (Cusack is not reprising his role for the lower-budget sequel). Steve Pink, who directed the first film, has directed the sequel from a script by Josh Heald, who co-wrote the original.
Corddry has joked about the sequel being very low budget (about a third of the original’s $36 million budget), so it could easily be a big hit in its opening weekend if enough people who loved the original come out to see it. Are you thinking about being one of them? Let us know in the comments.
