When we last brought you news about the sequel to the very funny throwback comedy Hot Tub Time Machine, MGM was planning on making the sequel with or without the first film’s main star, John Cusack. Earlier this month The Wrap reported that Adam Scott (TV’s Parks and Recreation, Step Brothers) would be taking Cusack’s place among the main cast. But how he would replace Cusack wasn’t made clear at that time.
Thankfully Rob Corddroy, one of the stars of the original, spilled his guts about the sequel during his appearance this week on The Howard Stern Show. Corddroy — who is reportedly writing the script with Steve Pink, who directed the first film and will also direct the sequel — revealed that Scott will play the son of Cusack’s character, whom the original gang of Corddroy, Craig Robinson, and Clark Duke meet when they take the Hot Tub Time Machine into the future.
However, Corddroy joked that the gang doesn’t go too far into the future for budgetary reasons, which will lead to a lot of jokes about how the future looks remarkably similar to the present. Hopefully the lower-budget nature of the sequel doesn’t kill its potential. One of the many good jokes has already been killed by the marketing department: Corddroy wanted to call the film Hot Tub Time Machine 3: Because Hot Tub Time Machine 2 Hasn’t Happened Yet, but I’m guessing the marketers thought that would be confusing.
Corddroy claimed the film would start shooting in June, so we may get another trip in the Hot Tub Time Machine sooner than we think.
