Hugh Jackman, please don’t ever stop surprising us. Just when most suspect that you might take a step back from playing your most famous character, Wolverine — after all, next year’s X-Men: Days of Future Past will mark the seventh movie you’ve appeared in as the character — you go and prove us all wrong.
Deadline reports that The Wolverine director James Mangold and Hugh Jackman are in negotiations with 20th Century Fox to re-team for a third Wolverine solo film. Mangold will write the treatment for the film, but no word on who else is involved on the creative end except for longtime X-Men producer Lauren Shuler Donner. No word on when it will shoot, but Jackman is still attached to play P.T. Barnum in the musical The Greatest Showman on Earth and everyone knows Jackman is always chopping at the bit to do another run on Broadway as well, so it might be a few years.
Though The Wolverine made less money at the U.S. box office than its predecessor, X-Men Origins: Wolverine, it grossed more worldwide, cost less, and was much better received by fans and critics. Because of that, the sequel is a no-brainer, especially since the excitement surrounding director Bryan Singer‘s return to the X-Men franchise with Days of Future Past has given the X-Men franchise a much-needed second wind.
At this rate, we’ll see Jackman starring in an adaptation of Old Man Logan in 2030 or so… and I don’t mind that idea one bit (well, except for the 17-year wait).
