Ice Cube has been talking about making a N.W.A biopic for a few years now, but it hasn’t amounted to much. Based on the history of the iconic rap group, one could imagine that there are only a few directors who could pull such a film off and Ice Cube knows who he would like to take on the film, John Singleton.
In case you are not familiar with Singleton’s work, he was the director responsible for the Oscar nominated film Boyz n the Hood. That right there would lead one to believe that Singleton might know a thing or two about making a film about the hood and gangsters. However, that film was made back in 1991 and since then Singleton has kind of lost some street cred by directing Baby Boy, 2 Fast 2 Furious and the upcoming Taylor Lautner film, Abduction.
The Playlist was able to ask the director about him potentially directing the N.W.A flick while at a press day for Abduction and his response,
I can’t talk too prematurely about the stuff I’m doing because nothing’s come to fruition yet, but Cube and I are talking about doing the N.W.A. story… The script is really, really good, and so we’re just figuring it out. New Line really wants to make it.
So it seems like the ball might actually be rolling on the film. There isn’t a lot of information regarding the script or any actors attached to the film besides Ice Cube but with the film potentially having a director, it might be a good time to start looking for some actors to fill the role of Dr. Dre, the late Eazy E, Mc Ren and Yella.
