Of all the boxing movies, perhaps the most iconic are Rocky (and its five sequels) and Raging Bull (and its zero sequels). While Rocky is the epitome of the inspirational sports movie, Raging Bull is the epitome of the hero-to-zero story. Furthermore, both Sylvester Stallone (Rocky) and Robert DeNiro (Raging Bull) used their on-screen in-ring success to launch careers that eventually made them Hollywood icons (Stallone was even inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame).
Though Stallone has rightfully retired the Rocky character after the much better than anyone expected Rocky Balboa, he’s managed to keep himself in fighting shape in movies like Rambo and The Expendables. DeNiro has also appeared in several action films in recent years like Killer Elite and the upcoming Killing Season, often more in a mentor role than the lead. The two notably appeared together in 1997’s Cop Land, which is perhaps Stallone’s best acting role and doesn’t ever get the recognition it deserves.
But according to The Wrap, Stallone and DeNiro might parlay their reps as boxing movie icons in the upcoming Warner Bros. comedy The Grudge Match, about two retired boxers deciding to have one last go in the ring. Peter Segal (Tommy Boy, 50 First Dates, The Longest Yard, Get Smart) is set to direct, Entourage creator Doug Ellin is writing the latest draft of the script, but no word on any of the other writers. Daredevil director Mark Steven Johnson is producing.
Stallone will turn 66 in July and DeNiro will turn 69 in August, so I’m not sure how believable this movie will end up being if it moves forward (thank goodness its a comedy). I mean, I’m sure they both could still probably kick my ass, but it would be a bit hard to take otherwise. Still, I think I’d much prefer a drama about two old boxers who don’t get in the ring, but I’m cautiously optimistic for what this pairing could produce.
