Way back in September I reported that Takeshi Miike was developing a 3D remake of Masaki Kobayashi’s samurai classic, Hara-Kiri (Seppuku). Well, after news hit a few days ago that Miike’s film, entitled Hara-Kiri: Death Of A Samurai (Ichimei), would be premiering at this year’s Cannes Festival, a new image was released to give us an idea of how the film would look.
The image we see is from a classic scene in the movie if you’ve seen the original. If not, you can read my review of it here. Hara-kiri was one of the first movies I ever reviewed for this site so it’s nice to bring it back and see how different I used to be as a writer. I also posted a picture from the original to show how close Miike has stayed to the source material.
Miike’s film will be the first 3D movie to be played at Cannes and I hope that it is well received. After his last film, 13 Assassins, I have complete faith in him when it comes to samurai films, not that I was very skeptical to begin with though. I hope you are all as excited as I am about this one, knowing Magnolia they will probably pick this up but I’m just hoping that it’s distributed sooner rater than later.
Synopsis:
Seeking an honorable end, poverty-stricken samurai Hanshiro (played by Ebizo Ichikawa) requests to commit hara-kiri in the courtyard of feudal lord Kageyu’s estate. Trying to dismiss Hanshiro’s wish to save face, Kageyu (played by Koji Yakusho) recounts the tragic story of a similar plea years ago from young ronin Motome (played by Eita). But the arrogant lord is unaware of vengeful Hanshiro’s bond to Motome…
