It’s been nearly five years since the slapstick comedic director Stephen Chow graced the world with a new film but luckily, for those that live in China at least, the wait is short because Chow’s new film, Journey to the West: Conquering the Demons, is set to release on Feb. 7th (Chinese New Year). For the first time, Chow will not be taking the comedic lead in the film and has left it to Shu Qi and Bo Wong to carry the film.
As to be expected, the international teaser below is all sorts of craziness and it would be futile for me to try to explain what is going on in it, so I’ll just let you press play yourself and allow you to figure out what’s going to happen to our lead and the pig he is staring down (you’ll see what I mean).
Based on one of the Four Great Classical Novels of Chinese literature of the same name, Stephen Chow’s “Journey To The West” is a contemporary remake of the misadventures of a Buddhist monk as he makes a pilgrimage from China to India. The monk travelled to the “Western Regions” during the Tang Dynasty, to obtain sacred texts (sūtras). The bodhisattva Avalokiteśvara (Guanyin), on instruction from the Buddha, gives this task to the monk and his three protectors in the form of disciples – namely Sun Wukong, Zhu Bajie and Sha Wujing – together with a dragon prince who acts as Xuanzang’s steed, a white horse. These four characters have agreed to help Xuanzang as atonement for their past sins.
