With The Avengers hitting theatres in May, it’s time we move on and start focusing on Marvel’s next film which will be Shane Black’s Iron Man 3. Yes, in case you haven’t heard, Jon Favreau will not be returning to the directors chair for this film but will be on site to lend a helping hand. While we don’t know the storyline or who the villain for the upcoming film will be, a recent casting sheet let out some interesting details about who will be returning and what the story will focus on.
Two-time Academy Award nominated Robert Downey Jr. will reprise his roles as as Tony Stark, an industrialist and master engineer who builds a powered exoskeleton and becomes the technologically advanced superhero, Iron Man. Scarlett Johansson will return from “Iron Man 2? playing Natasha Romanoff aka “The Black Widow”, and Gwyneth Paltrow plays Stark’s closest friend, love interest, and business partner Pepper Potts. Don Cheadle, who replaced Terrence Howard after the first “Iron Man”, returns as Lt. Colonel James “Rhodey” Rhodes – Stark’s personal pilot, chief aviation engineer for Stark International, and one of Stark’s closest friends.
Multi talented actor, screenwriter and film director Shane Black is taking over the directing duties from Jon Favreau, who directed the first two films in the “Iron Man” series. Black also is writing the screenplay for “iron Man 3? with Drew Pierce and Robert Downey Jr’s creative input. He recently said not to expect “Iron Man 3? to feature any other heroes from Marvel’s universe saying that after “The Avengers” the plan is to go back to self-contained single-character stories. Shane Black has directed Robert Downey Jr. before – in Black’s last feature film directing job “Kiss Kiss Bang Bang” in 2005.
and in case you are in the business of being an extra on films or just want to be a part of Iron Man 3,
Shooting will take place in the Wilmington, NC area and other locations in North Carolina from May 21, 2012 through September 7, 2012. The film’s main stars are being cast out of Los Angeles, however many supporting and day player acting roles will be cast in North Carolina. All of the extras, photo-doubles and stand-ins for the films stars will be cast in North Carolina. The production will create 550 “high-quality, well-paying jobs” and 1,000 talent opportunities in N.C.
So what does this actually tell us? Well not a whole lot besides that the film will focus on Iron Man and that no other heroes from the Marvel Universe will be featured in the film. This doesn’t mean that they won’t make an apperance or be referenced too, it just means we won’t see Thor or The Hulk or anyone else with significant screen time. Let’s be real, you can’t really forget what will happen in The Avengers or have it not affect this film at all.
There are rumors going around that the film will be based of the Extremis story line, which if you haven’t seen or read, you can get in on Netflix Instant Queue. In a nutshell, Tony Starks injects himself with this nanotechnology and it literally turns him into Iron Man so to say and he must defeat a man who has also been injected with the nanos. There is much more to the story, but I recommend you check the motion comic out for yourselves, because it is a fantastic story line. I’m still hoping this is not true and in fact we finally get to see Iron Man face off against The Mandarin, one can dream though.
Thanks to Slashfilm for the casting sheet.
