A new trailer for Skyfall, coming to theaters this November, has been released…and it looks fantastic. Rather than give a shot-by-shot description, which could potentially deaden your emotional reaction to the trailer, it seems smarter for me to give my impression of it.
Personally, I am not a huge James Bond fan. I have seen a movie or two with the character, and while I was entertained, I was never in love with 007. This film looks to change all that. It has the feel of a traditional action thriller at first, something which isn’t bad at all, except for the fact that many action thrillers have the perception of being soulless, focusing on big fight scenes rather than big emotional events. Skyfall seems to have both in ample regard. It appears that the film will focus on the psychology of James Bond (Daniel Craig) being James Bond– how can he be such a successful agent after all this time? The nature of someone getting too old for their calling is always an idea I have found to have strong creative potential, and it looks like this will deliver, particularly with death seeming to be a major theme in the film (judging by the amount of times death-related phrasing is mentioned in the trailer). Furthermore, it seems that M (Judi Dench), Bond’s supervisor is going to have the layers of her character peeled back a bit, adding even more complexity to the story. A rift between the two looks to be another aspect of Bond’s exploration of why he does his job– if there is so much tension between the two, is it even worth it anymore?
The trailer itself is absolutely well-constructed as well: between the score, shot selection and dialogue, this definitely appeals to people on a multitude of levels. I was instantly converted to counting the days ravenously until the film comes out, and after viewing the trailer, I’m sure you will be too.
Skyfall is set to hit theaters on November 9th.
