On what has been a very slow news month, some big news came out today involving the highly anticipated Guardians of the Galaxy film along with some interesting statements from Chris Evans regarding his Captain America role.
We have been hearing rumors for about a month now regarding James Gunn and his involvement with Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy film, first it was that he was hired to rewrite the script which was originally done by Chris McCoy and Nicole Periman. Then we started hearing that Marvel was interested in bringing him on as director for the film, but Gunn kept quiet. Well today Gunn has been given the OK by Marvel Studio president Kevin Feige and took to his Facebook to make the following announcement.
For a month or so there’s been a lot of Internet speculation about my involvement with Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy. Until now I haven’t said anything, because I’m trying to be less expulsive about this project than I am about the rest of my life. But last night I got the go-ahead from Kevin Feige to let you all know that, yes, indeed, I am rewriting and directing Guardians of the Galaxy. As a lifelong lover of Marvel comics, space epics, AND raccoons, this is the movie I’ve been waiting to make since I was nine years old. Kevin, Joss, and all the folks at Marvel have been amazing collaborators so far, and we’re committed to bringing you something majestic, beautiful, and unique. I am incredibly excited. I am also incredibly grateful to the fans and the press for all their words of encouragement and support regarding my involvement with this project since the news first leaked. Thanks – you have, honestly, touched and overwhelmed me. And that’s it for now. Other than the occasional photos of my dog and cat here on Facebook, I’ll talk to you again in August 2014 when Guardians is released!
Lets hope that last part of his comment isn’t true because I sure hope we get to talk to him way before the film is released in 2014, if not then looks like we will be seeing a ton of photos of his dogs and cats over the next 24 months. I think some might be a bit skeptical if Gunn is the right choice for such a complicated film due to its far out there characters. If you think about it, Marvel has done a fantastic job at giving lesser known directors the opportunity to shine with a Marvel film and so far that seems to have paid off nicely. Gunn will be good for the film and hopefully his passion for the comic carries over into the film.
Sticking with the Marvel news, Chris Evans recently spoke with Collider regarding what we can sort of expect from Captain America: The Winter Soldier regarding flashbacks and the tie in from events in the Avengers. Also he mentioned that he would like (as Cap) to show up somewhere in Thor: The Dark World. Here is the conversation
The most I am looking forward to is exploring a little bit of Steve’s…they had all those deleted scenes with The Avengers because a lot of those scenes are for Captain 2, you know what I mean? It was good stuff, but it all felt like that was his story. It is a different movie. With The Avengers there was so much to cram in. Like I said, it was a long movie anyway. So I think making it any longer would have just been exhausting…. A lot of that stuff [that was cut] is for Captain America 2. That is his story. It is him trying to on a personal level adjust to the fact that everyone he knows is gone and the whole Peggy Carter of it all. There are a lot of things that he kind of has to come to terms with. So I don’t know. I am excited to kind of see flashes of the first Captain, if you know what I mean, and to see his memory of what we now know as an audience of who he was.
[Chris] Hemsworth and I even talked about that. I would love to do a little thing in Thor 2. It is obviously going to be tricky trying to work out the plot, the reason why I am not there to help him, and why he is not there to help me. But the best thing about Marvel is that, like I said, the movies were so good and we had such a good time making them.
This brings up an interesting point, that I haven’t really though much about. The first phase of Marvel films all had the end credit scenes that led up to The Avengers and even the post credit scene in Avengers sort of led toward The Avengers 2. That being said, what will Mavel do for their infamous post credit scenes? You can still throw hints at The Avengers 2, but it might not pay off as well especially if Guardians of the Galaxy could possibly be the set up for that film. Maybe they could all lead into the Guardians since as of right now is scheduled to be the final film before Avengers 2. I guess we will have to wait and see when the first film in Phase two hits next year, Iron Man 3.
