Both Sean Connery and Roger Moore played James Bond in seven movies. Several Harry Potter actors appeared as the same characters in all eight movies. But Hugh Jackman is poised to beat those numbers. Not only will this year’s X-Men: Days of Future Past make the seventh time he has played Wolverine in a movie, but he is expected to reprise his role in the next X-Men film, X-Men: Apocalypse. Now, according to The Wolverine director James Mangold, we will likely see Jackman playing the Canadian mutant for a ninth time in another solo movie after X-Men: Apocalypse.
Late last year there were reports that Jackman and Mangold were negotiating with Fox for another Wolverine solo movie. On Twitter, Mangold revealed that as of now the plan is that he will be shooting the next Wolverine solo movie after X-Men: Apocalypse wraps. Then, when several news outlets reported as big news, Mangold sent out another tweet to say, “Well, duh.”
Considering X-Men: Apocalypse is already scheduled for release on May 27, 2016, it’s likely we wouldn’t see the next Wolverine solo movie until 2018 at the earliest. But would Jackman still be up for another Wolverine movie by then? Well, believe it or not Jackman would be turning 50 in 2018. While that might seem a little old to play an invulnerable mutant, keep in mind that Jackman got in his best Wolverine shape for the last movie when he was well into his forties. Heck, Roger Moore played James Bond until his late fifties, and Jackman is in far better shape than Moore ever was. On top of that, Jackman seems extremely attached to the role and probably won’t be re ready to give it up just yet.
In fact, I fully expect a 60-something Jackman to play Wolverine in a movie adaptation of Old Man Logan, a comic book storyline that featured an aged Wolverine over fifty years in the future. I wouldn’t be surprised if Jackman already had that in his agenda.
