Jamie Foxx — what happened? After impressing more-or-less everyone in the world with his Oscar-winning role as Ray Charles in Ray, Foxx hasn’t done anything even remotely as impressive. But perhaps he’ll get a chance to return to prominent roles as the title character in Django Unchained (according to ShowBiz411), Quentin Tarantino‘s upcoming homage to Spaghetti Westerns. Previously rumored for Django, the ex-slave bounty hunter, has been Will Smith, Idris Elba, and even Chris Tucker. Of the four I still think Idris Elba (Thor) is the most physically imposing and therefore the one I “buy” the most in the role, but I imagine the producers might be pushing Tarantino for one of the three more “known” actors.
Already penciled in for the film is Christoph Waltz (Inglourious Basterds) as Django’s mentor, Leonardo DiCaprio as Calvin Candle, the slaveowner who owns Django’s wife and is Django’s ultimate target, and Samuel L. Jackson as Stephen, Candle’s head slave.
The unconfirmed reports of the rest of the cast, which began when Franco Nero announced that he would be making a western with Tarantino starring along with Keith Carradine and Treat Williams titled The Angel, The Bad and The Wise are still unconfirmed. Stacey Sher, who produced Pulp Fiction, will be re-teaming with Tarantino on Django Unchained. It’s set to begin production this fall, and I’d imagine that although it is set in America, it will be mostly shot in Europe, like most classic Spaghetti Westerns.
