Production for Jane Eyre, an adaptation of Charlotte Bronte’s classic novel, is complete. Under the direction of Cary Fukunaga (Sin Nombre), an official movie poster, stills, and trailer have been released. With an all-star cast, the film offers a gothic depiction of this dramatic, yet romantic tale that continues to thrive with audiences, no matter how many different movies have been made. Hit the jump for more details!
The cast includes Mia Wasikowska (Alice in Wonderland) as the title character, Michael Fassbinder (Inglorious Basterds) as Edward Rochester, Jamie Bell (Defiance) as St. John, Imogen Poots (Solitary Man) as Blanche Ingram, Judi Dench (Bond 23) as Mrs. Fairfax, Sally Hawkins (Never Let Me Go) as Mrs. Reed, and Jayne Wisener (Sweeney Todd) as Bessie.
For those of you who are not familiar with the story, here is the plot synopsis, which seems to be faithful to Bronte’s original novel, according to IMDB: “A mousy governess (Wasikowska) who softens the heart of her employer (Fassbender) soon discovers that he’s hiding a terrible secret.”
Yahoo! Movies adds these details to the story: “Jane Eyre flees Thornfield House, where she works as a governess for wealthy Edward Rochester. The isolated and imposing residence – and Mr. Rochester’s coldness – have sorely tested the young woman’s resilience, forged years earlier when she was orphaned. As Jane reflects upon her past and recovers her natural curiosity, she will return to Mr. Rochester – and the terrible secret that he is hiding…”
ObsessedWithFilm.com calls Fukunaga’s take a result of “a bold new vision,” clad with “ghost story aspects” and “an unusually eerie tone.” This new approach portrays the film as more of a thriller, perhaps making the story more relevant to today’s audience. In 1996, Anna Paquin (True Blood) starred as young Jane in a forgotten version of Jane Eyre, and even further back in 1943, Orson Welles and Joan Fontaine starred in a remake as the lead characters.
Set for release March 11, 2011, this can also prepare audiences for the 2011 release of Bronte’s sister Emily’s famous novel-turned-movie, Wuthering Heights. Take a look at the images, poster and the exciting trailer below!
