In case you haven’t heard, Javier Bardem is kind of a big deal right now. He’s already won an Oscar for his remarkably chilling performance in No Country For Old Men, is nominated for another Oscar this year for his performance in Biutiful, and is being courted for the lead role in Ron Howard‘s multi-film and TV series adaptation of Stephen King‘s Dark Tower. Now Deadline is reporting yet another potential way Bardem can continue making every actor in the world jealous: he’s been offered the lead villain role in the next James Bond film. Hit “more” to find out exactly what we know about this potential huge news!
Of course, the Deadline story only mentions that Bardem was offered “a starring role,” but naturally that has to be the villain: I mean, do you expect Bardem to be the new Q? Obviously Bardem has what it takes to play the villain based on his No Country For Old Men performance, and unlike many Bond villains Bardem is certainly big enough to be a physical match for Daniel Craig‘s Bond. It seems likely that Bardem will have to weigh the choice between Bond and the Dark Tower films, though I am not sure a man who just had a child (congrats by the way!) would want to spend perhaps multiple years away from the child working on the Stephen King opus. I mean, he’d certainly miss out on all those key things that new fathers look forward to. But that’s just my take, who knows what Bardem is actually thinking in this situation.
Sam Mendes (American Beauty, Road to Perdition) will be directing the as-yet-untitled film (although unsubstantiated rumors via Bleeding Cool have suggested the film might be titled Red Sky at Night). The script is by Neal Purvis and Robert Wade, who have written the past four Bond films, although sources say that John Logan (Any Given Sunday, Gladiator) will be joining the duo this time around. Daniel Craig will, of course, return as Bond, and we can probably expect Judi Dench to return as M. Up until now Simon Russell Beale, an English stage actor, was rumored to play the main villain, but certainly the news about Bardem doesn’t rule out Beale‘s potential role in the film.
