A lot of people don’t like the New York Post. I’m not sure what the big problem is, since it’s the only newspaper I can get both hard news, ridiculous scandals, and breaking entertainment news like Javier Bardem officially signing on to play Roland the gunslinger in the upcoming multi-film/TV show adaptation of Stephen King’s seven-book Dark Tower series.
Of course, the Post is also the same paper that reported Christian Bale was signed to play Roland back in January, so I guess I can somewhat get the animosity…
Bardem is a perfect choice for Roland, who is a a gunslinger who travels a hybrid western/fantasy world in his journey to find the namesake Dark Tower. After all, Bardem‘s Oscar winning performance in No Country For Old Men was practically an evil version of Roland, as far as I’m concerned. I’m sure many King fans are worried that the film won’t do the books justice, but since the film series will tie up Bardem for several years, so I imagine he’s fully committed to seeing Stephen King’s series adapted faithfully.
The film series will be directed by Ron Howard, with Akiva Goldsmith and Mark Verheiden writing the screenplays. The seven book series will be distilled into three films, with a television series airing between the installments. The first film is set for a May 17, 2013 release.
