Walt Disney Pictures has recently announced that their live action adaptation of John Carter of Mars will now simply be called John Carter.
The film is being directed by Andrew Stanton and is set to star Taylor Kitsch as the heroic John Carter with a release set for March 9, 2012.
The film is based on Edgar Rice Burrough‘s science fiction series which sees Civil War veteran John Carter transported to the world of Barsoom (Mars), where he becomes caught up between the different races of warriors who inhabit the red desert and helps prevent the destruction of the planet due to it’s own civil war.
Even thought the original title for the film was really the title of the third book in the series, the movie is actually based on the first novel titled A Princess of Mars.
Disney hasn’t provided any reasoning for the title change, but I feel we will probably see a few more changes before the film is released because John Carter just doesn’t seem to work.
The film also stars Lynn Collins, Samantha Morton, Mark Strong, Ciaran Hinds, Dominic West, Thomas Hayden Church and Willem Dafoe.
