Hit the jump to read about his upcoming projects!
The characters that have helped build his impressive career are so loved and lauded that we can immediately identify them as icons of pop culture and legendary characters in film because of Depp’s brilliant acting skills. These names include: Sweeney Todd, Jack Sparrow, Ed Wood, Willy Wonka, the Mad Hatter, Ichabod Crane, John Dillinger, Cry-Baby, Don Juan, and of course, Edward Scissorhands… so who’s missing? A vampire perhaps? Or possibly Snow White’s hunter? Maybe another another Hunter S. Thompson journalist type?
HollywoodReporter.com reveals that Depp will join forces with good friend and director, Tim Burton, for the eighth time in a movie called Dark Shadows. Warner Bros. presents a “big screen incarnation of [this] gothic vampire TV soap opera,” which aired from 1966 to 1971. Depp will play Barnabas Collins, originally portrayed by Jonathan Frid, a vampire who lives in Maine while in search of a long lost love. The script has been a work in progress for Seth Grahme-Smith (Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter) and John August (Big Fish). This film has apparently been in the works for over three years now as Depp is a big fan of the televised series. With all the craze over vampires in entertainment, Depp can sink his proverbial teeth into this trend with his own unique approach.
A commitment to Dark Shadows comes in the midst of his rumored attachment to Rupert Sanders’ Snow White and the Huntsmen as the male title lead. MovieBuzzers recently reported on this film which tells the tale of the “huntsman [who] is ordered to take Snow White into the woods and kill her but instead he chooses to let her go and the two are evidently chained together for part of the movie as they make their escape,” according to IMDB . Also in line for this project is Tom Hardy (Inception) as Eric and possibly Charlize Theron (The Road) for the Evil Queen.
Another project that Depp’s name was in connection with was Triple Frontier directed by Kathryn Bigelow (The Hurt Locker). However, it has been rumored that the Oscar-winning director’s second choice is Mark Wahlberg (The Other Guys), and according to IMDB, he seems to be free since wrapping up The Fighter. Also, for the second time (after Corpse Bride), Depp will be lending his voice to Gore Verbinski’s animated feature Rango, about a chameleon with heroic aspirations.
Aside from working on Dark Shadows starting in April 2011, Depp will also be promoting The Rum Diary, the filmed based on the novel by Hunter S. Thompson, who also wrote the novel to 1998’s Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, in which Depp starred opposite Benicio Del Toro. In The Rum Diary, Depp plays Paul Kemp, a journalist for a Caribbean-based newspaper “who finds himself at a critical turning point in his life, amidst a group of lost souls all bent on self-destruction,” as per IMDB.
While this article unmasks all the different faces that we will soon associate with the three-time Oscar nominee, Johnny Depp can transform and astound audiences no matter the role. To see him as a seemingly ordinary guy for a change, next month he stars as Frank Taylor alongside Angelina Jolie in the espionage thriller, The Tourist.
