If even five years ago you would’ve told me that the dorky kid from Third Rock from the Sun would grow up to be one of the most talented actors of his generation, I would have… well, I can’t think of anything witty, so just accept that I wouldn’t have believed it. But after starring in Inception, The Dark Knight Rises, and Looper, it’s obvious that not only is Joseph Gordon-Levitt a great actor but he’s quickly become a fan favorite.
Gordon-Levitt can add another high-profile role to his resume because Deadline is reporting that Gordon-Levitt will star in Sin City: A Dame to Kill For, which is already shooting with much of the original cast. Curiously, Gordon-Levitt is reportedly playing “Johnny,” which Deadline says is “one of the core characters in overlapping story lines that feature returning players like Mickey Rourke, Clive Owen, Bruce Willis, Rosario Dawson, along with newcomers that include Dennis Haysbert.” However, there isn’t any character named Johnny in any of the Sin City graphic novels, so it’s likely that Gordon-Levitt’s character is playing a role in the new Sin City storyline penned by Frank Miller, the writer/artist of the original comic series, co-director of the movie, and co-writer of the script along with the other co-director Robert Rodriguez and co-writer William Monahan (The Departed). Later the official press release from the Weinstein company confirmed that by revealing “Gordon-Levitt will play Johnny, a cocky gambler who disguises a darker mission to destroy his most foul enemy at his best game.”
Not long afterward Deadline did a follow-up story that added Christopher Meloni (TV’s Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, Oz) to the growing cast list as a police officer (of which there are many in Basin City… and nearly all of them are corrupt). The original Deadline article is the first indication that Clive Owen will be returning as Dwight McCarthy and that Bruce Willis will be returning as Hartigan. It also states that Josh Brolin is a “potential name” to join the film. Even though the movie is shooting now, because of the green screen process that Sin City is shot in the actors don’t have to be on “set” all at the same time, so the movie will virtually fit in any actor’s schedule.
We’ll see who else will end up in the film when it gets to theaters on October 4, 2013.
