With all the news of Snow White & the Huntsman, it seems that Relativity Media doesn’t want anyone to forget about their project, The Brothers Grimm: Snow White. It has been recently announced that Oscar winner Julia Roberts will portray the Evil Queen in this different version of the classic tale. Hit the jump for more details!
According to Entertainment Weekly, as for The Brothers Grimm: Snow White, producer and Relativity CEO Ryan Kavanaugh said in reference to Roberts, “She is an icon, and we know that she will make this role her own in a way that no one else could.” At this time, there is no word yet who will play opposite The Pretty Woman actress as Snow White or The Prince, but shooting is set to begin in April, which would preempt Robert Sanders summer start for Snow White & the Huntsman. Both films are set for 2012 releases. USA Today claims that The Cell director Tarsem Singh will be behind the camera for the Grimm version, which can be described as a “modern tale full of comedy and adventure.”
Universal is behind the Sanders-directed feature, rumored to star Kristen Stewart (The Twilight Saga) as Snow White and Charlize Theron as the Evil Queen. The film is set for a December release next year according to Deadline. The Independent provides some insight as to what makes this version different: “The story follows Snow White, banished by the queen, and the hunter, who becomes her mentor instead of following the queen’s orders to kill her.”
Deadline compares the ‘Snow White’ race by adding, “Usually rival picture races end when one project either lands a big star or makes it into production first. That’s happened on such films as the Oliver Stone-directed ‘Alexander,’ which ended the ‘Alexander the Great’ film Baz Luhrmann was prepping with Leonardo DiCaprio.” We can also see a correlation with two separate Marilyn Monroe-focused pictures, My Week with Marilyn starring Michelle Williams, and Blonde which stars Naomi Watts.
At this time IMDB has no information for the Singh picture, but that will probably change within the next few days, yet Sanders’ picture includes Theron, Stewart, and Viggo Mortensen (The Road) on board. Not to mention that there’s still Snow & the Seven, which The Independent says, “will be set in 19th-century Hong Kong with seven monks (instead of dwarves) offering refuge to Snow White, who discovers her destiny to conquer evil. It will be directed by Francis Lawrence (I Am Legend) and Yuen Woon-ping is on Board as the martial arts choreographer.”
