Back in April we reported about rumored casting for the latest big screen adaptation of Leo Tolstoy’s epic Russian drama Anna Karenina, but now a definite cast has been confirmed, to follow Atonement director Joe Wright’s instruction.
According to Deadline, Keira Knightley, who’s earning loads of award’s season buzz for her role in the upcoming A Dangerous Method, is taking on the lead role, alongside Jude Law (Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows) as her husband Alexei Karenin and Aaron Johnson (Nowhere Boy) as Anna’s lover, Count Vronsky.
In addition, the impressive supporting cast includes Kelly Macdonald (Boardwalk Empire) as Kitty, Saoirse Ronan (Hanna) as Dolly, Matthew Macfayden (The Three Musketeers) as Oblonsky, Olivia Williams (The Ghost Writer), and Domhnall Gleason (Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows Part 1 & 2).
Shakespeare in Love writer Tom Stoppard has adapted Tolstoy’s lengthy novel for the screen. For those of you who don’t know, the story follows Anna “trapped in a loveless marriage… [and she] looks for a better life, but finds only a more complicated one,” according to IMDB.
With such a strong cast and crew developing the project, it’s no doubt that this will create some serious movie magic; however in the year or so it will take for us to finally see the film, I highly recommend challenging yourself with the classic novel. It’s not a light read, but the story is a can’t-miss!
Even though Knightley has become the unofficial queen of period dramas, what do you think of her portraying the ill-fated Russian literary icon? Do you think that she and Law pair up against one another as husband and wife, as well as enemies?
