Quentin Tarantino has a knack for taking actors outside of their comfort zone, so it’s almost no surprise (though it still is a surprise) that Deadline is reporting that Kevin Costner is in negotiations to join Tarantino‘s Django Unchained as the villainous Ace Woody, whom Deadline describes as “the sadistic trainer of the male fighting slaves who entertain the white patrons of Candyland as well as the female slaves who are forced to be prostitutes.”
Candyland, of course, is not the familiar game played by children in this case, but the ranch owned by Calvin Candle, to be played by Leonardo DiCaprio. Neither Costner nor DiCaprio are known for bad guy roles, so Tarantino is definitely taking them out of their comfort zone. It’s expected that Costner will begin filming Django Unchained after he wraps in his role as Pa Kent in Man of Steel. The article also mentions that Tarantino might be looking to cast an unknown as Django’s wife Broomhilda, who is owned by Calvin Candle.
Already set for the film are Jamie Foxx as Django, Christoph Waltz (Inglourious Basterds) as Django’s mentor, and Samuel L. Jackson as Stephen, Candle’s head slave. Stacey Sher, who produced Pulp Fiction, will be re-teaming with Tarantino on Django Unchained. It’s set to begin production this fall, and I’d imagine that although it is set in America it will be mostly shot in Europe, like most classic Spaghetti Westerns.
