One of my favorite book series as a child was the hilarious Captain Underpants. In fact, I’m pretty sure I still have a couple of copies sitting on my book shelf that I smile at once in a blue moon as I reflect on those easy reads and funny drawings. Obviously I was delighted when the studio system wanted to adapt the property into a feature film and in 2011 DreamWorks won the bidding war to do so.
Fast forward to today and it seems the film is getting some traction now as The Wrap has reported that comedians Kevin Hart, Ed Helms, Nick Kroll, Jordan Peele and Thomas Middleditch will be lending their voices to the animated feature, which is being adapted by Nicholas Stoller (The Muppets) and directed by Rob Letterman (Monsters vs. Aliens).
I think the casting of these comedians is spot on and I’m looking forward to hearing them lend their voices to the film, though I think there’s a better voice out there then Ed Helms for Captain Underpants, he doesn’t have that booming fake-hero voice that one would imagine Captain Underpants would have.
Below is a basic plot synopsis of the film and who each individual will be voicing.
“Hart and Middleditch will voice scheming fourth graders George Beard and Harold Hutchins, who love playing pranks, hiding in their secret treehouse and writing comic books. But when they accidentally bring their favorite comic book character, Captain Underpants, to life through a hypnosis accident involving their megalomaniacal principal Mr. Krupp (Helms), their elementary school life becomes anything but elementary.
Peele will voice George and Harold’s nerdy nemesis Melvin, while Kroll will voice the villain, Professor Poopypants.”
I would love to see this in a classic 2D animation style rather than seeing the series in the 3D style we’ve become accustomed to today. I saw this because I’m envisioning that the film will look like a Jimmy Neutron episode when it would work out so much better as a 2D film with a comic book feel to it. This Scott Pilgrim vs. the World in an old-school animated style.
No word on a release date yet but hopefully we’ll find out sooner rather than later.
