If reports are to believed, legendary actor Kevin Spacey is set to play historic British prime minister, Winston Churchhill, in a new biopic.
The star of the current hit show, House of Cards, is set to take on the role of the wartime hero and leader in Captain of the Gate, which will focus on Churchhill’s rise to power in 1940 and his struggles to defeat Nazi Germany in the Second World War. Churchhill is a larger than life figure to portray, as he led Britain against Hitler’s regime during the ’40s. The screenplay is set to be penned by Ben Kaplan, who has previously written about US president Ronald Reagan for a History Channel film, as well as working on documentaries about the Vietnam war.
The announcement follows in the footsteps of other feature films that have sometimes failed to capture the stories of iconic British figures, such as The Iron Lady starring Meryl Streep and most recently Noami Watts in Diana. There’s more pressure perhaps on this film to get it right as Churchhill is widely regarded as the most iconic and popular British prime minister in history. In 2002 he was voted the greatest Briton of all time in a public poll.
With double Oscar winner Spacey attached, the project is now just looking for its director. Captain of the Gate is being put together at production company Sierra/Affinity and looks likely to be financed by France’s StudioCanal.
