It looks like something pretty big is in the works between China and Japan. The two nations will be co-producing a new action/drama period piece directed by Kiyoshi Kurosawa titled 1905. Set during the titular period, the new film will star Chinese superstar Tony Leung Chiu-Wai (Infernal Affairs) and Shota Matsuda (Hard Romanticker).
In the film, “Leung will play a loan shark who must venture from Guangdong Province to Yokohama Japan to recover debts from a band of anti-Manchu government revolutionaries. While there he crosses paths with ultra-nationalist (Matsuda), who’s tasked with deporting the same men, and a young woman in a relationship with one of them (Maeda).”
Kurosawa will be working outside his element on this project as 90% of the film is set to be in Cantonese while only 10% is in Japanese. It’s also his biggest project to date and is set to start production this November with a Fall 2013 release date slated.
The coolest part of 1905 is that they plan on recreating the “port of Yokohama as it was 100 years ago on location in Taiwan” which should be impressive to see on film.
