As a fan of ocean-faring cinematic adventures, I apologize for never getting around to reviewing the Oscar nominated Norwegian film Kon-Tiki, directed by Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg, it’s a beautiful oceanic trip that I highly recommend for fans of films at sea. The reason I bring up Kon-Tiki is that the directing duo have just been signed on to direct Disney’s latest sequel, Pirates of the Caribbean 5, and they couldn’t have been a better choice.
After being approved by everyone involved, including Johnny Depp and producer Jerry Bruckheimer, Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg will be taking charge on a script that’s been re-written by Jeff Nathanson. I assume the script has to be half decent if the team took on the project as this is a rare opportunity and a perfect opportunity to bring them into the spotlight.
I’m very happy with this choice as the duo have already proved they know how to shoot on water, how to capture a sense of wonder and adventure on camera, and how to make an adventure film with little money. So now, I ask you, imagine what they’ll be able to bring to the screen with a serious Disney budget backing them. Only time will tell but Pirates of the Caribbean 5 will be an interesting installment to check out once it hits theaters sometime at the end of 2014 or summer 2015.
