With all the buzz that’s been going around for Kristen Stewart to play “the fairest of them all” in Snow White & the Huntsman, it has been officially confirmed that the Twilight star will portray the lead. IMDB lists the actress in the role, alongside The Road stars Charlize Theron as the Evil Queen and Viggo Mortensen as the Huntsman. The film, which is currently in pre-production, is written by Evan Daughtery and directed by Rupert Sanders.
ShockYa reports that the movie’s producer Palak Patel exclaimed via twitter, “KStew is officially Snow White and her deal is in final negotiations and will close next week.” Twilight director Catherine Hardwicke has expressed that Stewart will be “kick ass” as Snow White, but perhaps because Sanders’ vision for the film is centered around an adventure aspect, the softer version of the fairy tale that we all recognize from Disney won’t be reproduced.
Of course this all comes in the midst of a Snow White-esque competition since Julia Roberts has also signed up for The Brothers Grimm: Snow White as the Evil Queen, directed by Tarem Singh. However, there are no other roles filled at this time, so it looks like Sanders is already ahead of the race. Not to mention, Movie Buzzers has also reported that Francis Lawrence (I Am Legend) is also working on Snow White & the Seven, “a fantasy / adventure focusing on a 18th century British girl living in Hong Kong who trains with seven Shaolin monks.”
In other news, it has also come out that Big Love actress Ginnifer Goodwin is reprising a small screen role of Snow White in a new ABC show called Once Upon a Time. Critics immediately embraced these rumors, as it seemed that Goodwin was the best fit for the role, whereas Stewart’s off-screen personality has been very off-putting despite her skyrocketed success.
I’m eager to see Goodwin put front and center, even though it’s not for an actual motion picture. Her star meter is gracefully rising, especially because of her upcoming role opposite Kate Hudson in Something Borrowed. It always seemed that the petite actress plays someone off to the side, but her breakout starring role in He’s Just Not That Into You has set her up for an exciting opportunity, where I still don’t believe that Stewart would make a believable “princess of the forest” in the Grimm Brothers’ classic story.
