Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci are the hot names in science fiction these days, writing installments in the Transformers and Star Trek films, scripting Cowboys and Aliens and the upcoming Spider-Man film, as well as being responsible for the sci-fi sensation Fringe. So if they talk about a science fiction idea, people listen.
It is that vein that it has recently been announced that Universal has acquired Sagittarius A, which has been described as a “sci-fi thriller”. It was pitched by Kurtzman, Orci, and Steven Karczynski, whose Black List screenplay The Umbra has made big waves. Perhaps the most interesting aspect of the news is that Karcyzynski is the only one attached to write the screenplay.
Personally, I’m very excited. I’m a big Kurtzman and Orci fan, and I recognize a large part of their success comes from the strength of their ideas. Getting a Black List screenwriter involved can only be a good thing, and I’m eager to see where this goes, as good execution is essential to a strong screenplay.
More news as it develops.
