There’s been a lot of exciting casting news for Zack Snyder‘s upcoming Superman: The Man of Steel (although Warner Bros. has yet to confirm that title). The big announcement is that Deadline has the official press release from Warner Bros. announcing Kevin Costner‘s casting as Jonathan “Pa” Kent, the adopted Earth father of Kal-El, the Kryptonian child who would grow up to be Clark Kent/Superman. Opposite Costner will be Diane Lane (Secretariat) as Martha “Ma” Kent. Lane is an inspired choice, and should make a perfect complement for Costner.
However, on the “will not be in the film” side is Viggo Mortenson (Lord of the Rings). Zack Snyder confirmed in an interview with Latino Review that Mortenson will not be in the film. Mortenson was previously rumored to being considered for the role of General Zod, the rumored-but-unconfirmed main villain of film.
Superman: Man of Steel is set for a December 2012 release. David S. Goyer (Batman Begins, The Dark Knight) is writing the screenplay based on a story developed by Goyer and Christopher Nolan, who will also produce the film. Zack Snyder (Watchmen, 300) will direct, with Henry Cavill already announced as playing the Man of Steel.
Happy to see Costner and Lane in the film? Give us your thoughts in the comments!
