All eyes are on Robert Downey Jr. for his upcoming film, Iron Man 3, and even the recently announced sequel to The Avengers, but it’s his latest project, The Judge, that has been making headlines, especially given the fresh-faced new additions to the supporting cast.
Former Gossip Girl star Leighton Meester and Jeremy Strong (Zero Dark Thirty, Lincoln) are currently in talks to join The Judge, according to Variety. The dramedy follows Downey Jr. as “a lawyer who returns home for his mother’s funeral discovers that his father, the town judge, is suspected of murdering her.”
Robert Duvall (Crazy Heart) plays the title character, followed by an impressive cast which includes Vera Farmiga (TV’s Bates Motel), Billy Bob Thornton (Jayne Mansfield’s Car), Vincent D’Onofrio (Law & Order: Criminal Intent), and Dax Shepard (TV’s Parenthood). Meester would set to play Farmiga’s daughter, and Strong will be Downey Jr.’s youngest brother.
David Dobkin of The Wedding Crashers and The Change-Up fame is set to direct the movie, with a script co-written by Bill Dubuque and Nick Schenck (Gran Torino). Since Downey Jr. has such a natural flair for comedy, always bringing an understated vulnerability to his characters, which is what makes him so entertaining to watch. Not to mention, that it would be refreshing to see the two-time Oscar nominee outside of the big budget Blockbusters that he’s been so successful in lately.
With such a colorful cast, it should be interesting to see risings stars like Meester and Strong measure up to their cast mate veterans. Meester is currently filming God Only Knows with Harvey Keitel and Ben Barnes, and is rumored to be attached to Veronica Mars. In addition, Strong plays Lee Harvey Oswald in his latest film Parkland, which recounts the events following JFK’s assassination in Dallas’ Parkland Hospital.
The movie is set for a 2014 premiere. Is The Judge the kind of film you’d like to see? Do you think Duvall and Downey Jr. make for a good on-screen father-son pairing?
