Among the slew of forthcoming chick flicks (Something Borrowed, Bridesmaids, From Nada to Prada) Monte Carlo presents a PG-rated “royal” case of mistaken identity. The movie stars Leighton Meester (The Roommate), Katie Cassidy (Gossip Girl), and Justin Bieber’s current flame / Disney darling Selena Gomez (Wizards of Waverly Place), Glee‘s Cory Monteith, and Andie MacDowell (Groundhog Day).
According to IMDB, the storyline is this: “A young woman (Gomez), her uptight step sister (Meester) and her best friend (Cassidy) use their savings for a long anticipated dream trip to Paris, which turns out to be a big disappointment. When they decide to take a break from their lousy tour and duck out into the lobby of a luxury hotel, one of them is mistaken for a spoiled British heiress. Before they get a chance to reveal their true identities they are wrapped up in misadventures during a vacation to Monte Carlo instead.“
Under the direction of co-writer Thomas Bezucha (Family Stone), this movie is based on the novel Headhunters by Jules Bass. Also contributing to the script are TV writer April Blair, Maria Maggenti (The Love Letter), and Kelly Bowe (Major Movie Star). For any fashion-savvy movie goers reading, costume design for the film is done by Shay Cunliffe, the mastermind behind the style of films such as He’s Just Not That Into You, Because I Said So, and How Do You Know.
In what looks to be a carefree adventure of girl power, I’m reminded of what I love about movies like Chasing Liberty with Mandy Moore and Matthew Goode, or even Leap Year with Amy Adams and Matthew Goode (hmm… notice a pattern?). Sometimes when things get a little mixed up across the pond, it makes for one of those comedies that won’t necessarily scream Oscar, but will guarantee a good excuse to just sit back and escape into a modern day fairytale movie in chick flick territory.
Monte Carlo premieres on July 1st nationwide. Take a look at the trailer below and let us know if you would see this movie! What do you think of the trio of young actresses?
