Fifteen years ago, only the comedy-savvy moviegoer would’ve recognized actress Leslie Mann (This Is 40), but in recent years, the wife of director Judd Apatow has taken the spotlight as a leading lady of comedy. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Mann is currently in talks to star alongside Cameron Diaz (What To Expect When You’re Expecting) in the revenge comedy, The Other Woman.
The film, produced by Julie Yorn (We Bought A Zoo, Bride Wars), follows two women who realize they’re in a love triangle with the same man, reportedly played by Game of Thrones star Nikolaj Coster-Waldau. The script written by newcomer Melissa Stack (of the short, Tependris Rising) and the project is rumored to be under the direction of Nick Cassavetes (The Notebook).
Rumors have been circulating about this film, which was previously offered to Bridesmaids star and writer Kristen Wiig for Mann’s possible role. Also, the movie is said to be set in the vein of another female-empowering revenge comedy, The First Wives Club. It would certainly be interesting to see the two funny blondes face-to-face while most likely encountering plenty of hilarious knee-slapping obstacles on the way.
However, it should also be acknowledged that Natalie Portman (Black Swan) and Lisa Kudrow (Romy & Michelle’s High School Reunion) starred in a dramatic film of the same name back in 2009, but the current Cassavetes-helmed project is unrelated.
Filming is supposed to begin in late spring, which is when we’re likely to hear more definite casting details. Mann is currently lending her voice to two animated flicks, Mr. Peabody & Sherman & a sequel to Rio, so perhaps this rumor isn’t too far from the truth.
What do you think about the possibility of seeing Mann and Diaz pitted against each other? Who do you think makes for a better comedic actress?
