We all know that Eddie Murphy was a comedy god in the 1980s, then sold his soul to appear in many high-paying family comedies that surely made Murphy a lot of cash but didn’t take advantage of his immense talent. So even though Murphy‘s upcoming film Tower Heist is directed by Brett Ratner (sorry, I still can’t forgive or forget X-Men 3), it’s exciting to see that the just-released trailer suggests that we have at least some of the old Eddie Murphy in this film. Could the Eddie Murphy comeback we’ve been waiting for be around the corner? We can only hope.
Otherwise the film — about a group of guys, whose savings are cleaned out by a Bernie Madoff-like figure, decide to pull off a revenge robbery — looks like it can be a legitimate winner based on the trailer. Uptight Ben Stiller with wacky Eddie Murphy could be a great pairing.
Tower Heist also stars Casey Affleck, Zachary Levi, Matthew Broderick, Tea Leoni, Gabourey Sidibe, Alan Alda, and Judd Hirsch, from yet another script that is written by a committee (IMDB lists 8 people contributing to the screenplay!), which is never a good sign. It is set for a November 4 release.
