So I’ve already reported on the fact that Atari, the one-time king of the arcade and video game market, is selling the film rights to their classic arcade games one-by-one: so far movies based on Asteroids and Missile Command are in the works. Another adaptation of a classic arcade game, Space Invaders, is also on the way. Well, according to The Hollywood Reporter, you can add Rampage to the list, as New Line Cinema is developing an adaptation of the classic Midway monster mash arcade game.
Rampage, for those who might not remember, is a game in which the player takes control of a person who has been changed into a giant monster (George the gorilla, Lizzie the Godzilla-ish lizard, or Ralph the werewolf) via lab experiments to smash various U.S. cities into rubble in angry revenge. The game has spawned various sequels. The smash it up button-masher is one of my all-time favorites, and since it was obviously based on giant monster movies like King Kong and Godzilla it probably will translate pretty well to film. In fact, since Rampage has always featured a bit of cartoonish humor, I’m starting to think a comedy version of Cloverfield based on Rampage would be amazing.
John Rickard, who produced the Nightmare on Elm Street remake, Horrible Bosses, and the upcoming Jack the Giant Killer, has been put in charge of the project. No word on any others involved or whether the film will be animated or a combination of live-action and animation, but I could see this becoming more fun than you’d might initially expect.
