Come on, you knew this was coming…
While some in the industry have been predicting that the 3D gimmick is dying off, a movie that’s over fifteen years old and has already been seen by more-or-less everyone under thirty has exceeded expectations in a 3D re-release. The Lion King 3D was the #1 movie at the box office during the last two weekends in September and took third place just this past weekend, making nearly $80 million dollars (more than Disney’s 2011 family films Winnie-the-Pooh, Mars Needs Moms, and African Cats combined!)
Of course, Disney has always been a company that knew how to make even more money, so today Disney announced that it will be re-releasing several Disney and Pixar animated classics in the coming years, with one film being released every January and September for a limited run. The upcoming slate of films are:
Beauty and the Beast (January 13, 2012), Pixar’s Finding Nemo (September 14, 2012), Monsters, Inc. (January 18, 2013), and The Little Mermaid (September 13, 2013)
Whether Disney will extend this beyond this is anyone’s guess. This follows a long tradition of Disney re-releasing its animated classics every few years before VHS and DVDs were common — the first movie I remember seeing in a movie theater was a re-release of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs — except, of course, now with the extra dimension. January and September tend to be crappy months for movies anyway, so I say bring them on.
