We live in the dark ages, the age of villains, dark heroes and more when it comes to the world of entertainment. Cinema has seen a surge in the quality of its blockbuster entertainment and TV has entered a golden age thanks to darker storytelling strategies. It has impacted our culture so much that even Disney is jumping on the bandwagon, first with a movie centered on the Sleeping Beauty villainess Maleficent and now a movie focused on the wealthy evil lady from The Hundred and One Dalmatians, Cruella de Vil.
It was announced this week that Disney has hired Aline Brosh McKenna to pen a script for the upcoming film, now titled Cruella (clearly they are sticking with the one word name theme for these flicks). McKenna actually wrote the script for The Devil Wears Prada, We Bought a Zoo, Morning Glory and the upcoming Cinderella film so she should be a pretty good fit for tackling this bitchy-esque family friendly project.
If you remember, Disney released an awesome animated version of Dodie Smith’s 1956 novel, where Cruella was first introduced, in 1961 and then was brought to life by Glenn Close in two live-action films in 1996 and 2000. I guess because of her association with the character, Glenn Close wants to remain close to the project and is acting as an executive producer on the film.
There is no word yet on the story or who might be in the running for parts but expect some top talent to join the cast, it is a Disney movie after all. What do you all think, do you want a Cruella film, do you think we’re even ready for one? Oh wait, does anybody care? I just see this as a way to milk old franchises for every penny their worth.
