The Dark Knight Rises is perhaps the most anticipated film of 2012 ,yet also the 2012 film that we know the least about. That’s not uncommon when dealing with director Christopher Nolan, who is about as secretive as a big budget filmmaker in the Internet era can be. So it’s no surprise that we, in the film news and rumors business, scoop up any and every rumor about The Dark Knight Rises as a potential fact. So the latest bit of news comes from the usually reliable Batman-On-Film website which reports than an Israeli site has reported that Israeli actor Alan Aboutboul (Body of Lies, Munich, Rambo III) has been cast in the film as “an evil scientist”.
Could this finally mean that Professor Hugo Strange, a psychiatrist hired by Gotham City to work with the police department in capturing Batman, is in the film? Strange is one of the earliest Bat-villains, making his debut in Detective Comics #36, less than a year after Batman himself debuted in Detective Comics #27. In his initial appearances, Strange was a typical mad scientist, but in the 1970s Strange learned Batman’s identity and began an obsession with killing Batman and taking his place, often employing mind games in an attempt to break down the Caped Crusader. Does this also confirm that parts of the film are based on the “Prey” story arc, originally published in Legends of the Dark Knight #11 – 15, which involves the Gotham mayor hiring Strange to bring in the outlaw Batman early in the Dark Knight’s career. That certainly gels with the current storyline of the film series, in which Batman is thought to be an outlaw by the general public. It should also be noted, moreover, that the Prey story arc also features Catwoman, another character who is in The Dark Knight Rises.
There’s just SO much that we don’t know about this film, which is both incredibly exciting and incredibly frustrating!
So what do we know? Well, we do know that returning to the film will be Christian Bale as Batman/Bruce Wayne, Michael Caine as Alfred, Gary Oldman as Commissioner Gordon, and Morgan Freeman as Lucius Fox. Joining them will be Tom Hardy as Bane, Anne Hathaway as Catwoman/Selina Kyle, Marion Cotillard as Wayne Enterprises board member, Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Officer John Blake, and Josh Pence as the young Ra’s Al Ghul for flashback scenes.
So are you sick of Dark Knight Rises rumors yet, or are you thirsty for more? Let us know what you think about a possible third (or fourth? fifth?) villain added to the film in the comments!
