For some reason, Hollywood never wants to give much love to Hockey films. We have a million Baseball, Football, Boxing and Basketball films but you can count all the hockey movies on two hands, which is sad because I have yet to see a bad hockey film. Luckily, hockey film fans are in luck next year because not only will we be getting Kevin Smith‘s Hit Somebody, but now we have Goon, which features Seann William Scott as just that, a hockey goon.
Here is the synopsis and red band trailer of the film which has been making its way around the festival circuit this year:
Labelled an outcast by his brainy family, a bouncer overcomes long odds to lead a team of under performing misfits to semi-pro hockey glory, beating the crap out of everything that stands in his way.
The film seems to be a mash up of Slap Shot meets Happy Gilmore which can only equal greatness. The reviews for the film have been very positive thus far, regardless of it being shown only during the Toronto Film Festival which might make reviews a little bit bias towards their country’s national sport.
Some may be concerned that this film might take away or be similar to Kevin Smith’s two part hockey film Hit Somebody, but Smith has said the only similarities between the films is that they are both centered around hockey.
Goon was written by Jay Baruchel and Evan Goldberg and also features Jay Baruchel, Alison Pill and Liev Schreiber. The film will be released on February 24th via VOD but will be released in theaters March 30th.
