Magnet Releasing has been a very busy bee as of late. The genre arm of Magnolia pictures has recently acquired not one but two Korean films for an eventual US release. The first is Chaw (or Chawz), a monster movie about a giant boar that made its North American premiere at the New York Asian Film Festival, a film that I am upset I didn’t get to see. Think of it as Godzilla but with a giant angry pig. Crazy yet awesome. I heard it was decent so I’ll be sure to give it a look-see when it hits the DVD shelves .
While Chaw is a nice surprise, it’s Magnet’s next acquisition that has got me going crazy particularly since I told a distributor about the film and he decided against it. I’m talking about Kim Ji-woon’s controversial Korean thriller I Saw the Devil which was picked up at TIFF earlier today. This is the film that wasn’t allowed to get screened in Korea because of how brutal its violence was. The film had to be cut short by a minute and a half to get the equivalent of a ‘R’ rating and screening privileges. I’ve heard amazing things about this film and am extremely excited that it will definitely be getting a US release. The film stars Choi Min-sik, the lead from Oldboy, and Byung-hun Lee. I’ve posted information regarding I Saw the Devil a while back. You can check it out here
Magnum will be releasing Chaw(z) on DVD in the near future. I’m going to assume that we won’t see I saw the Devil until next year as part of Magnet’s Six Shooter Film Series, which is unfortunate, but at least we’ll have the opportunity to see it.
I have posted the trailers to both films just in case the thought of a monster pig and an extremely controversial thriller has raised your curiosity.
