Well this is news that makes me very happy. The Israeli directing duo Aharon Keshales and Navot Papushado, who debuted their second feature Big Bad Wolves (read my review here) at the Tribeca Film Festival earlier this year, have just secured a distribution deal in North America thanks the glorious genre arm of Magnolia pictures, Magnet Releasing. This is a perfect match of filmmakers and studio as Magnet has the reach and such a dedicated following to get word out about this solid thriller which unfortunately didn’t happen with their amazing last film Rabies. If you hadn’t seen the film at a festival or followed it’s progress closely chances are you wouldn’t even have known that it came out on DVD last year.
Big Bad Wolves is a black comedy thriller about a father seeking revenge against the man suspected of brutally murdering his daughter and a renegade cop looking to put the alleged killer behind bars. Check out the full release below and be sure to keep this on your radar.
MAGNET RELEASING ACQUIRES NORTH AMERICAN RIGHTS TO
CRITICALLY-ACCLAIMED THRILLER “BIG BAD WOLVES”
Cannes (May 14, 2013) – The Wagner/Cuban Company’s Magnet Releasing, genre arm of Magnolia Pictures, announced today that they’ve acquired all North American rights for the film BIG BAD WOLVES from XYZ Films. A darkly funny, ingeniously crafted Israeli thriller, BIG BAD WOLVES was written and directed by Aharon Keshales and Navot Papushado and stars Lior Ashkenazi, Rotem Keinan, Tzahi Grad and Dov Glickman. BIG BAD WOLVES was produced by Chilik Michaeli, Avraham Pirchi, Tami Leon, Moshe Edery and Leon Edery.
The film originally had its World Premiere at this past TriBeCa Film Festival and will next screen at the upcoming Marché du Film via 6 SALES, who will be handling international rights. The film will screen Wednesday, May 15th at 4:00pm at Olympia 6 and Saturday, May 18th at 8:00pm at Riviera 4. In BIG BAD WOLVES a series of brutal murders puts the lives of three men on a collision course: The father of the latest victim now out for revenge, a vigilante police detective operating outside the boundaries of law, and the main suspect in the killings – a religious studies teacher arrested and released due to a police blunder.
“The pitch black humor in BIG BAD WOLVES could only succeed with truly deft, intelligent filmmaking,” said Magnolia President Eamonn Bowles. “With this wonderfully nasty and thrilling film, Aharon Keshales and Navot Papushado have proven themselves to be major talents with big careers ahead of them.”
The deal was negotiated by Magnet’s Director of Acquisitions Peter Van Steemburg with Nate Bolotin of XYZ Films. Magnet is planning a theatrical release for the film later this year.
