Though Benedict Cumberbatch — who has one of those blessed voices which is instantly striking and identifiable — was cast as the villain in the upcoming Star Trek sequel, it wasn’t clear exactly who the Sherlock star would be playing. After all, Star Trek has decades of history and some memorable villains to draw from, so it would be anyone’s guess on who Cumberbatch would be portraying, and it was even possible that he could be playing a brand new menace to the crew of the Enterprise.
It seems the wondering and speculation can stop now: after several days of rumors, the fan website Trek Movie claims it has confirmed that not only will Leonard Nimoy return as Spock Prime in the sequel, but Cumberbatch will portray Khan Noonien Singh in the sequel. For most of us non-rabid Star Trek fans, Khan might be the series’ best villain. He was portrayed by Ricardo Montalban in an episode of the original series and reprised the role for the second Star Trek movie, Wrath of Khan — in which he famously killed Spock! Whether that will factor into Spock Prime’s cameo is anyone’s guess. There’s also a third rumor that famous Trek baddies Klingons will appear in the sequel too, but there isn’t any confirmation on how involved in the story they are (a brief scene featuring a Klingon was cut from the original).
These are some pretty exciting developments — unfortunately, fans will have to wait over a year for the next Star Trek, which is set for a May 2013 release.
