It seems like a lifetime ago that it was announced RoboCop was being remade. Production was put on the back burner then started up again and a whole list of names were rumoured to play the title character, some good, some not so good. Then things really started to kick it up a gear with a list of fantastic names added to the production, Samuel L. Jackson, Michael Keaton and Gary Oldman. So with all that promise, and all the wait, we’ve now been given out first look at the trailer. Full of explosions and a sleeker looking RoboCop, we see that director Jose Padilha has tried to make it a more modern actioner. The movement looks more natural, with a lot more larger than life explosions. RoboCop himself looks like he’s going to retain a lot more ‘Alex Murphy’ than he did in the original, and this is where is looks shaky.
It could work, but it’s a drastic change from the original 1987 RoboCop which saw Alex Murphy brutally murdered by a gang and became an experiment for OCP (Omni Consumer Products), turning him into RoboCop – a machine who single handedly serves the public trust, protects the innocent and upholds the law. RoboCop had no idea who he was apart from brief moments of his memory coming back from time to time.
A change in direction could work, it’s a reboot after all, but we’ve seen this before with Hollywood tampering with fan favourites and change the story too much that we simply can’t forgive them.
Take a look at the trailer yourself. Are you excited for the RoboCop remake scheduled for 2014 release or does it look like it could be another Hollywood remake flop?
