Man, Matthew Vaughn sure knows how to disappoint fans of his films. Deadline is reporting that the director of awesome films like Kick-Ass, X-Men: First Class and Layer Cake has decided not to direct the X-Men: First Class–Days of Future Past, the sequel to the great X-Men origins reboot. What makes this even more interesting is that Bryan Singer is sitting atop the short list of replacement directors. In case you didn’t know, Singer directed X-Men and X2, launching the X-Men franchise and guiding it as a producer ever since.
Now it is unknown why he is dropping the project but Vaughn wrote the treatment for the sequel, so unless he thinks his own work isn’t up to par or has another project he is going to direct relatively soon, reports suggest an adaptation of Mark Millar’s Secret Service, I can’t see why he would do this.
First I was excited he’d be back for Kick-Ass 2 and now this? I think it would be fair to say that Vaughn doesn’t direct want to direct sequels and doesn’t plan on doing so anytime soon.
X-Men: First Class–Days of Future Past is set for a July 18, 2014 release date so if they’re going to keep that date they’ll need to find a new director pretty quickly.
What do you think of this? Is Bryan Singer a good replacement for Vaughn or should they look at some other talent that hasn’t been involved with the franchise yet?
