When it comes to iconic franchises such as Superman, everyone and their dogs pretty much know who the main characters are and what they look like. Well it seems like Zach Snyder is at it again and has said screw it to what people thought they knew about Superman and his universe for Man of Steel.
Before we get into the latest rumor/speculation/fact?, lets review what Snyder has currently done regarding his “changes to the Superman world. First the biggest change has to be the Superman costume itself, now granted this is the new costume from the New 52 relaunch by DC, however it is a change many will recognize and not necessarily understand. The second change was the casting of Amy Adams as Lois Lane and Snyder allowing Adams to keep her darkish red hair as oppose to the brunette look Lois has had for what seems like forever. Not a huge issue, but I know many people have been a bit upset with the look. Finally, the biggest change was the casting of Laurence Fishburne as Daily Planet’s loveable Editor-In-Chief, Perry White. As many probably know, for the most part, Perry White has always been a white male in his mid 50’s. Obviously with the casting of Fishburne, that will change.
Now that we have those out of the way, it’s time to add a new one to the list of changes coming to Man of Steel. Apparently there will be no Jimmy Olsen in the film and instead we will see Jenny Olsen, the female version of Jimmy. As of right now this has to be considered a rumor because there has been no guarantee this is the case. The news comes from IMDB which currently has actress Rebecca Buller playing the role of Jenny Olsen in the film. Again, this hasn’t been confirmed and could just be a mistake, however it wouldn’t really come to much of a surprise given the other changes Snyder has made with the film. Also, there is a scene from the trailer showing Buller and Fishburne running from a collapsing building. Now she could just be any ‘ole staffer at the Daily Planet, but I highly doubt it.
Overall, I know many Superman fanboys will probably be all torn up about this, however it really isn’t that big of a deal. Yes, I know this kind of destroys some of the potential story arcs some might have hoped the future films might tackle, but overall this seems like a fair change. Personally, Jimmy always got on my nerves so I’m excited to see a female approach to the role if the rumors are true.
Along with those mentioned above, the film also stars Henry Cavill, Kevin Costner, Diane Lane, Russell Crowe, and Michael Shannon. Man of Steel opens nationwide June 14, 2013.
