Hope y’all had a wonderful Christmas; perhaps you received some Blu-Rays or DVDs. But if you’re Alan Taylor you received something a bit better in your stocking: Deadline reported on Christmas Eve that Taylor has been picked as the director for Thor 2.
Though Taylor has only directed a few films (1995’s Palookaville, 2001’s The Emperor’s New Clothes, 2003’s Kill the Poor), as I pointed out in my initial story Taylor has a more extensive career directing television, including episodes of Game of Thrones, Deadwood, The Sopranos, Boardwalk Empire and Nurse Jackie, so something like Thor 2 will be a new experience for Taylor.
Taylor is replacing the previously-announced director Patty Jenkins (Monster), who exited the film after having “differences” with Marvel — something that apparently annoyed Natalie Portman, who lobbied hard for Jenkins to get the gig (if rumors are to be believed).
The writer isn’t set in stone yet either. Though Thor co-writer Don Payne wrote a script, Marvel is looking for someone to do a rewrite. The top choices include John Collee (Happy Feet, Master and Commander: Far Side of the World), Robert Rodat (Saving Private Ryan), and Roger Avary (Pulp Fiction).
What we do know is that Chris Hemsworth and Natalie Portman will definitely return and Samuel L. Jackson is sure to pop up… and that’s about it
