Today was a very busy day for Marvel news, dropping some huge details about a few of the Phase Two films and also life after Phase two. So lets not waste anytime and dive right in because there is a bunch to talk about.
First lets start with Thanos and his role in the Marvel universe. If you haven’t seen The Avengers, then you need to rush out and buy the Blu-ray this Tuesday and figure out what you are missing out on. For those that have, you know that the mid credit scene involved The Mad Titan Thanos and that he would somehow factor into the Marvel universe. Jim Starlin who is the man responsible for creating Thanos in the comics has reportedly been talking about his involvement with the film or lack there of and the future of the character.
Starlin spoke to a reader of Cosmic Book News during the Montreal Comic-Con this past weekend. Starlin said he now has a deal with Marvel and will be compensated for his creations being used in the films. Prior to this, Starlin was in no way involve with the films nor was he being compensated for the use of Thanos or the Infinity Gauntlet, which was last seen in Thor. Starlin also went on to say that Thanos will appear in both Guardians of the Galaxy and The Avengers 2, while this is not shocking news and was pretty much assumed, it’s still nice to have some reassurance.
Staying with the Guardians of the Galaxy/Thanos news, MTV recently spoke with actor Scott Porter and discussed what his plans were for the future and his association with Marvel since he was a potential candidate for Captain America before Chris Evans won the role. Porter explains that he is a huge fan of the Guardian comics and thinks he would be the right person to play the intergalactic police/hero, Nova. Now before people begin wondering who the heck is Nova and he isn’t a part of the announced Guardians, lets slow it down and think about this. Porter knows his stuff and Nova is a pretty important person with the whole Thanos storyline and unofficially a part of the Guardians, at least in the comics. This would be a great way to introduce a character that right now isn’t capable of having his own film but still needs to be brought into the Marvel universe. You can google Nova if you want a more detailed history.
Here is what Porter had to say regarding the film.
As far as superheroes go, I’m the voice of Cyclops in a couple different projects, which was very cool. But I still would love to play a superhero in live action. Marvel just announced that they’re going to do ‘Guardians of the Galaxy,’ which is another property that I love and that I read growing up, and I’d love to play Nova. I think any kid who gets into the acting business, I think they have a couple of things that they always want to do. For me it was: play a war hero, play an athlete, which I got to do, die a horrible death in a horror movie, which I’ve gotten to do, and then be a superhero. So I’ve marked two things off the list, and am working at the others.
“Gunn is a unique choice. But I think that he could be a really great shepherd for that property. I think ‘Guardians’ is going to be a lot of fun I think it’s going to be really cool. I thought the next thing that I would try and go after would probably be ‘Heroes For Hire,’ but it looks like ‘Guardians’ is around, so…
Personally, I would love to see Nova in the film and think that Porter would be a decent Nova. With the film picking up more steam, one would imagine we would start hearing rumors about potential cast member and hopefully the lucky Raccoon out there that is about to become a real bad ass.
The next bit of news is more of just an inside look of what goes on in Kevin Feige’s (President of Marvel Entertainment) head and how far into the future he is looking. Feige also spoke with MTV regarding the future of Marvel, Phase two and how much enjoyment he gets with introducing people to this comic book world of Marvel.
There’s a great track record now about lobbing something in at the last moment to get the audience buzzing[…] Particularly when it came to Thanos, [we knew] that most people in that audience had no idea who that purple guy was — but they could clearly tell he was important, and knew if they asked the two or three people sitting next to them, somebody would know who he was.
Clearly, there’s a purpose to us putting him in the end of that movie. We do have plans for him[…] I wouldn’t say we ever feel the need to rush anything one way or the other. We succeeded in Phase One because we stuck to our guns and stuck to the plan. That plan took place over many, many years and it ultimately paid off. I see Phase Two unfolding in the same way of us taking our time, us doing what’s right for each individual movie, while folding in elements that will not only build up to the culmination of Phase Two, but even Phase Three.
Now before we even start trying to fathom what phase Three could even consist of lets focus on Phase Two Feige. We have a bit of time before we need to start going down that phase and if we do get to a phase three, I think we are in for a cosmic roller coaster. Maybe by 2017 we could see Avengers vs. X-Men??? One can always dream!
Anyways, Feige also touched upon the impact these films have had on both comic lovers and non comic lover.
Suddenly, you have a million people who had never heard of an Infinity Gauntlet or a Mad Titan learning those terms[…] I love that. I love when the experience goes beyond the movie theater and encourages people to look deeper into our universe.
I was equally excited by the notion that people went out and tried shawarma for the first time.
Oh Kevin, and we the people love you for what you have done to Comic movies and thank you that you haven’t shat on the properties ya’ll have (Take notes WB)
So as you can see some interesting news regarding the Marvel films and what would all this news be without a nice little treat for everyone at the end? Lets end this post Marvel Style! Here is some concept art from Iron Man 3, ENJOY!
