Thor wasn’t my favorite of the three comic book films released this summer so far (that would be X-Men: First Class), but that doesn’t mean I didn’t think it was great. It’s been doing very well at the box office, too — it’s currently in the top 5 films of 2011 (of course, expect that to change). So it’s to the surprise of no one that, according to Deadline, Marvel Studios announced that Thor 2 will be released on July 26, 2013. Thor 2 will follow Iron Man 3, which is already set for a May 3, 2013 release. I wouldn’t be surprised if we see at least two Marvel films every summer from now on.
Chris Hemsworth will be back as the God of Thunder after his next appearance in The Avengers, but Kenneth Branagh will not be in the director’s chair. The report says the split was amicable and that Branagh might be involved as a producer, but I am sure he has some more Shakespeare movies to direct (not that I’m complaining — keep ’em coming, Kenneth!) There’s no word on any other cast members or Marvel Universe characters who might appear, but it’s safe to assume that Samuel L. Jackson and his eyepatch will be showing up in the film at some point.
