In case you have been living under a rock the past few days, San Diego Comic Con is in full swing and with that comes some very interesting news regarding the Marvel Universe. Yesterday, in the infamous Hall H, the most anticipated panel took the stage and once again Marvel did not disappoint. Last year we saw the first test footage for Edgar Wright’s Ant-Man and were also officially introduced to Guardians of the Galaxy. Well this year Marvell decided to take those pieces and somewhat throw them out the window and threw fans, what I like to call, a curve ball.
After seeing The Avengers, everyone had assumed that the main villain in the sequel would be Thanos. Also it was assumed that The Guardians of the Galaxy would be the segway and introduction to Thanos’s background and how he will make the Avengers life a living hell, but according to Joss Whedon and Marvel, this is not the case. In fact Thanos might not even be in the sequel to the blockbuster film and if he is, his role could be very minor.
During the Hall H panel, Joss came out and showed a teaser trailer for the yet unnamed Avengers sequel. What the audience was shown was something mechanical being gradually created and molded into something. Pan a little out and we see the head to an Ultron robot and then cuts to the latest title card, Avengers: Age of Ultron. Let me just say, cheers, and jeers erupted from Hall H as no one had any idea that Marvel would be going this route so soon. In case you are still in disbelief, here is the official logo for the film straight from Marvel themselves.
So why is this such a big announcement and what does it mean for the rest of phase 2? Well strap on your nerd hats because it’s about to get bumpy.
Ultron is an aggressive artificial intelligence, which is housed in an adamantium body, which was created by a one Henry Pym, better known as Ant-Man. The age of Ultron was a pivotal point in the comic world, not to mention Ultron has been one of the most challenging and difficult villains the Avengers have faced.
One might be thinking, how does Ultron come to be without Hank Pym being introduced prior to the sequel and then eventually creating the Ultron program to help the Avengers out. Great question and an answer no one besides the minds at Marvel have the answer to. Likely what will happen is that Hank Pym will be introduced in an earlier film and will eventually have a bigger role in the Avengers film since the Ant-Man stand alone film has already been announced and is happening after the Avengers sequel. However, there is a possibility that Marvel decides to push the film up and tries to get the film out sooner then that, we will just have to wait and see.
Another interesting aspect to think about is that with Ultron, another character that has been rumored for years might finally come into play and that would be the Android, The Vision. Many believed that (SPOILER ALERT) when Agent Coulson was “killed” in the Avengers that he would be recreated into The Vision. Obviously with the new Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D show on NBC, we know that Coulson is in fact alive and kicking. Now there is still the possibility that Ultron will not be the only villain in the sequel and that Thanos might play a role in the film, but this is setting up to be one hell of a couple of years for Marvel. Worst case scenario Thanos become the big bad guy in the third Avengers film and Ultron makes a reappearance as well.
With so many different story routes Marvel can take, we as fans couldn’t be more excited to see this announcement. Personally I can’t stop thinking of the possibilities that have now presented itself. Thor: The Dark World and Captain America: The Winter Solder will play pivotal roles in setting this story line up so be sure to check them out when they hit theaters late this year and early Summer of 2014.
