Marvel Comics has definitely won the superhero movie battle this summer — heck, you could argue that it was impossible for them not to, with three major releases (Thor, X-Men: First Class, and Captain America). But as Marvel gears up for next summer’s superhero blowout The Avengers, one thing is painfully clear to Marvel execs: all of their most famous superheroes have been filmed. While DC Comics still has mega-stars Wonder Woman and Flash to fall back on (not to mention Superman in yet another reboot), Marvel has to start mining some of their less popular characters if it still wants to remain at the top of the comic book movie box office.
But the groundwork has already been set for one of Marvel’s more popular secondary characters, the mystic Dr. Strange. The Sorcerer Supreme of the Marvel Universe, Doctor Strange, is a surrealistic mage who defends the Marvel Universe from magical enemies and has been part of the Marvel Universe ever since his introduction in 1963. According to Twitch Film, writers Thomas Donnelly and Joshua Oppenheimer (who worked on Cowboys & Aliens and Conan the Barbarian) have been tapped to write a script. The duo have now turned in their first draft, and Marvel is on the hunt for a director for a possible 2013 release.
There actually was a Dr. Strange TV movie back in 1978, which was pretty terrible, and talk of a Dr. Strange film has been floating since the mid-1990s with names such as Wes Craven, Guillermo del Toro, and David S. Goyer attached at various moments. Hopefully this version gets us an actual Doctor Strange movie, though!
