The first trailer for Paul Thomas Anderson’s The Master has been revealed and it looks quite intriguing. It revolves around a man named Lancaster Dodd (Phillip Seymour Hoffman) who inducts a man named Freddie (Joaquin Phoenix) into a cult-like institution as a means to cure the mental ills that trouble Freddie in a post-war world.
The trailer seems to offer only a brief glimpse into the journey of these characters, however. It gives a taste of what to expect from the relationship between Dodd and Freddie, but doesn’t give the plot away- a refreshing change compared to most movie trailers-even though it is clearly a story based off of the founding of Scientology and its foudner L. Ron Hubbard.
The Master is set to open on October 12 and also stars Amy Adams and Jesse Plemons.
