I’ve been reading comic books for just about as long as I could read — in fact, I’m pretty sure I learned how to read from comic books — so while I’m currently enjoying this wonderful age of comic book movies I’m also well aware that the average moviegoer could no doubt become tired of them. After all, in May through July of this year alone we have Thor, Priest (if you count Korean comics), X-Men: First Class, Green Lantern, Captain America, and Cowboys & Aliens. So perhaps it’s possible that sometime soon we’ll ask all those superheroes to retire. That’s exactly where Matthew Vaughn (Kick-Ass, X-Men: First Class) plans to go next: Deadline reports that Vaughn’s next project (presumably after the already announced Kick-Ass 2) will be an adaption of the as-yet-unreleased comic series from UK TV host Jonathan Ross and artist Tommy Lee Edwards, The Golden Age, which is about retired superheroes. Hit “more” for all the early info on this project!
The plot of the film involves the retired superheroes helping their grandchildren set the world right when the middle generation makes a mess of the world. I bet the retirees also get those no-good kids to pull their pants up and stop skateboarding on the sidewalk, too. In the Deadline report Vaughn specifically cites Red and The Expendables as films that show that older people can still kick ass when they need to. As a fan of both of those films, I definitely agree, although Vaughn‘s actor wish-list seems a bit of an impossibility — he lists Jack Nicholson, Clint Eastwood, and Warren Beatty. I’d imagine if he’s willing to go younger it’d be great to see some actual retired superhero actors in this. Heck, you could do it just with former Batman actors: Michael Keaton! Val Kilmer! George Clooney!
This wouldn’t be the first time that Vaughn adapts a comic that isn’t yet released — Vaughn signed to direct the Kick-Ass film before the first issue of the comic had even been published.
It’s not confirmed that Vaughn would write or direct this, but he certainly would produce. Jane Goldman, who co-wrote Kick-Ass and X-Men: First Class with Vaughn and is Jonathan Ross‘ wife, would likely be involved, too.
